PRIDE

The SDL Foundation supports PRIDE (Partners for Rural Improvement and Development in Ethiopia).
Partners for Rural Improvement and Development in Ethiopia “PRIDE”

This charity, proposed by SDL Flatiron, is a non-profit entity founded by volunteers in Boulder, Colorado.  PRIDE has been providing assistance in school construction, health, clean water and other developmental needs to three villages in the rural highlands of North Shoa.  SDL's donation has enabled plans for 2010 to be speeded up, these include:

Water supply

PRIDE worked with local residents and local water officials to fund and complete the construction of a cap for a spring near the Dinshik School that supplies water to the school and 200 residents.  The cap includes a cistern, drinking water taps, separate animal watering facilities and clothes washing facilities to protect the spring water from contamination that leads to intestinal and other diseases.  These diseases can cause child and adult mortality, along with lost schooling opportunities and lower agricultural productivity.

Desks and furnishings

PRIDE has organised 150 3-seat desks, along with tables and chairs for teachers.  These desks have been delivered and should be adequate to accommodate all of the children in the schools of the Sebarwasha, Ebab Amba and Dinshik Schools.  This is a critical step to complete the initial improvement plans for the three schools.

The investments made by PRIDE this year, to which the SDL Foundation has been a major contributor, have directly and indirectly benefitted many people in rural Ethiopia.
• 357 children and 10 teachers at Ebab Amba, Dinshik and Sebarwasha have benefitted from enhanced school facilities, school furnishings and school supplies
• 110 children at Dinshik School and another 200 nearby residents have benefitted from the spring capping project for Dinshik
• Approximately 3,000-4,000 people in the vicinity of the three villages and health post have benefitted from the availability of additional medical supplies and indirect benefits of the schooling to families and communities

“On behalf of the Board and volunteers of Partners for Rural Improvement and Development in Ethiopia (“PRIDE”), I want to express our sincere gratitude for SDL’s generous offer of assistance to our organization. This donation comes at a time when we are ready to expand our successful efforts to new villages in the rural Highlands of Ethiopia.”    The Board of Directors, PRIDE
